”Waterfield has made a backpack that can easily fit into just about any lifestyle, whether it’s corporate, weekend or—dare I say it?—hipster. The Bolt is stylish without showing off, rugged yet classic looking and quite comfortable to lug about.”
I'm a bit of a bag junkie. I travel frequently and need the right gear to "get me there." This is much more difficult than it sounds, as I don't travel light. After purchasing this backpack, I've been able to cool my obsession to the next best "bag thing." Waterfield simply makes the best quality, best designed, and best looking bags out there IMHO. The entire Bolt line takes a very highly upgraded bag, and using the best materials, makes me feel more casual, but still look "high-end." This is what I try to "signal" in my everyday work life, and it is not easy to do with practically any other bag or manufacturer out there. Waterfield Designs has a real talent for it, and I now have four bags from them, including the Bolt Backpack, and have my eye on one or two more. These bags are simply the very best for my needs, and I can finally stop buying and returning other makers' bags. These are great! Many thanks Waterfield!
I received my bolt backpack last week and have been using it as my main backpack ever since. The bag looks and feels like great quality; The leather accents are elegant and the ballistic black denier material is durable and stylish. The bag is comfortable and well-designed for the most part. The only things I would improve are to 1) add a pocket on the top front, which is currently unutilized 2) to engineer the bag to stand on its own and 3) to add a lock on the back laptop zipper so it's not so easy for someone to open the bag from behind. Although the bag's base is flat and it usually stands just fine on its own, adding weights in the wrong places can shift the balance and cause it to slouch over. I know this is a common feature with bags and I wouldn't make a case about it except for the fact that Waterfield has engineered the pro executive backpack to have this functionality. Other than these aforementioned points, the bag is great and I'd highly recommend it.
How do you suggest I clean the ballistic nylon?
The ballistic nylon is *very* durable and will take scrubbing with a stiff brush and mild soap. Blot with towels/rags and let the case dry out. This should have the case looking good as new.
How do you suggest I clean the waxed canvas?
Waxed Canvas isn’t the easiest item on the planet to clean - part of the character-building process with Waxed Canvas is how it ages with scuffs, dirt, stains and all. Still, there are things you can do. This article gives you a good idea of how to clean and re-wax if and when you are ready. They suggest using dish soap and soft brush to clean, then drip dry, then take a hot hairdryer to heat up the wax and redistribute it. This will soften any blemishes and help with the dirt. The lines and crinkles on the waxed canvas are actually normal, and happens in shipping sometimes. All you have to do is use a hair dryer and you can flatten out the wax with your hand.
How do you suggest I clean the leather?
Actually, we suggest not doing anything. Part of the beauty of highly distressed leather develops as it gets used over time— with rain or getting bumped around. Leather conditioners will darken and alter the leather, maybe not something you desire. If at some point you want to condition the leather - we suggesting using Mink Oil. This will darken a bit at first - but will keep the leather very nice. You can also spread the oils around and smooth them out a bit with a hair dryer and your hand. Any leather discoloration or marks are straight from the actual hide itself; it's part of the character of the leather. That’s how you know it’s the real thing. Each hide has it own look; it's unique just like you. With naturally tanned leather, there's always going to be a bit of character on it that's hard to control. It's one of the reasons we like it so much, you'll always be getting a one-of-a-kind bag.
