* A poem by Michael Weber, written to the Waterfield Bolt Backpack, my sweetheart
Stretched out into planes of tense thread,
An anomaly, a sewn canvas masterpiece,
A needle treads
with vision of all the right places
Considered and appropriate
With a plan
That happened to be
And kept perfection, neatly packed
Holds everything and looks sleek & professional
This is one great looking bag. Note, the bag is much darker in person (waxed canvas version) than in the press photos. This is simply due to lighting differences. It's like a tree bark dark instead of khaki or tan. I really grew to love the color though. Another thing to note right away is that the straps have very little padding and the straps are set for a man's wide shoulders. For smaller framed people or women the straps may did into your under arms. Also, because of how the straps are set for a wide person, this bag may hurt your neck if you carry it with a lot of things for long periods. I purchased myself some strap padding from Z straps to help remedy how it sits on my shoulders. I hope it helps.
Otherwise this is my favorite backpack I've owned! I have the waxed canvas and I can tell it's going to age beautifully! It has so much character in its creases and wear areas. The front hidden pocket is pretty huge. Putting a lot in it will make the internal capacity smaller though. The gold liner is fantastic and really let's you see what's in the bag! This bag has one main compartment only, apart from the hidden pocket in the front. This is GREAT so I don't have to go searching through many partitions. I also like the second zipper added with access to the laptop and tablet sleeves because it keeps me from having to dig back to the laptop and tablet area. Very well thought out!
A very well built and charming bag! I keep coming back for more items from Waterfield! I just wish they allowed an option to set the straps for a smaller frame along with adding more padding.
How do you suggest I clean the ballistic nylon?
The ballistic nylon is *very* durable and will take scrubbing with a stiff brush and mild soap. Blot with towels/rags and let the case dry out. This should have the case looking good as new.
How do you suggest I clean the waxed canvas?
Waxed Canvas isn’t the easiest item on the planet to clean - part of the character-building process with Waxed Canvas is how it ages with scuffs, dirt, stains and all. Still, there are things you can do. This article gives you a good idea of how to clean and re-wax if and when you are ready. They suggest using dish soap and soft brush to clean, then drip dry, then take a hot hairdryer to heat up the wax and redistribute it. This will soften any blemishes and help with the dirt. The lines and crinkles on the waxed canvas are actually normal, and happens in shipping sometimes. All you have to do is use a hair dryer and you can flatten out the wax with your hand.
How do you suggest I clean the leather?
Actually, we suggest not doing anything. Part of the beauty of highly distressed leather develops as it gets used over time— with rain or getting bumped around. Leather conditioners will darken and alter the leather, maybe not something you desire. If at some point you want to condition the leather - we suggesting using Mink Oil. This will darken a bit at first - but will keep the leather very nice. You can also spread the oils around and smooth them out a bit with a hair dryer and your hand. Any leather discoloration or marks are straight from the actual hide itself; it's part of the character of the leather. That’s how you know it’s the real thing. Each hide has it own look; it's unique just like you. With naturally tanned leather, there's always going to be a bit of character on it that's hard to control. It's one of the reasons we like it so much, you'll always be getting a one-of-a-kind bag.
