Too big, too heavy won't use it
Really impressed with how it looks. Curious to see how it ages over time.
I like it. It is a good quality bag. It had several pockets and compartments as well.
Starting off, the shoulderstrap was not the one pictured on your product page, which was sad, because i was looking forward to trying the hatch-thingy that made it easy to adjust the height, supposedly. Instead i got a bag with a completely removable strap, which has its own benefits and downsides too. First off i want to talk about the way it is removable, although i like the thorough choice of using metal instead of plastics for the connections to the bag, in this case it brings another (possibly minor) inconvenience, being that it has many moving metal parts, it ends up clinking and clanging a lot when you go to wear it, not to mention if you happen to bump into something, something i find quite annoying, of course in this case i wouldn’t go back to the old design, but rather have a more complex fastening using less metal parts(and more fabric) in order to avoid it making a lot of sound, having it be removable is a good idea because it means if the strap alone breaks i could just buy a new strap instead of a whole new bag, but i see no need for it to be *easily* removable, it is easy to just tuck it into the newspaper pocket or something if you want to carry it like a briefcase afterall. It also doesn’t *have* to be easily adjustable, as there is, and should be; just one person using this bag.
The shoulder pad is not ideal either, although i do enjoy the grippy-ness, and the stretch on it, i think it could be implemented better, for starters, since it is a grippy shoulderpad, moving the bag around becomes more of a hassle, this would be easy to solve by disconnecting the pad from the strap, and having the pad grip onto your shoulder, while the strap moves through it, this way you would lose some of the suspension on the bag, so maybe put stretchy material further down the sides of the strap instead of having it be on the pad? Having it (the stretch) be on the pad is also slightly more annoying than having it elsewhere, as you can feel it stretch, instead of just feeling the good suspension. But this way it is easier to move the bag around while still maintaining the comfortable use of the shoulderpad.
Another issue i had was that the custom request i had was misunderstood, and i didn’t therefore get quite what i expected to get, but this is also partially on me for not explaining it specifically enough.
Aside from all of that, the bag arrived in the condition i expected, and my first impression is that it is a very high quality bag, despite all my complaints. I did notice that in the main compartment the pockets for pens and phones and such, was on a black and loose flap, i’m not entirely sure why this is, but it made me stop and question the design, so i will mention it, it’s definitively not a major issue, but it pops out from the rest of the yellow interior and makes it feel a bit ... foreign? In the bag, it feels like it breaks with the overall design. There was also the problem of the design skewing in favor of left-handed people, but it’s a minor issue, as you’ll get used to it over the course of using the bag. The only other complaint i have is that the pocket underneath the flap doesn’t have a square opening into another compartment, but only the circular opening into the headset holder pocket, or w/e Waterfield marketed it as.
On another note, the bag was capable of taking a lot more baggage than Waterfield made it look like on their promotional pictures, the bag does get rounder the more baggage you put into it though, so it loses a bit of that briefcase-like design if you do pack it full. But from a use perspective, that’s a feature they don’t showcase well that i really appreciate.
All in all my first impression is that it is a very good bag, but not quite perfect.
(You can check the picture to see how the bag looks while filled, and what the new removable strap metal parts i mention are.)
I ordered my Cargo from my kitchen table in Brisbane, Australia after 8pm on a Friday night, with the full expectation my new laptop was going to be sitting on the same table for some 3 - 4 weeks while I waited for my new protective messenger bag to arrive.
Before 11am Tuesday, a big box of Waterfield goodness was sitting on my desk, halfway around the world from where the journey started!! That's less than 87 hours elapsed time - less than 12 working hours our time - and it's playtime!!!! What a buzz.
I first purchased a Waterfield sleeve several years ago, so I already had experienced Waterfield's incredible quality, and have visited the website plenty of times since as I've lined up bag options with planned laptop purchases.
I ended up getting one of the new Dell XPS17's on release, and before any oversized cases were available virtually anywhere. After plenty of research and some discussions with Gary and a couple of members of the WF support crew (special callout to Jasmine, who personally measured bag sizes for me), the Cargo emerged as the only option big enough to fit the new laptop.
The laptop fit is incredible - mm perfect. The quality of the Cargo is simply spectacular, and the functionality of the design just rocks. The great scent of natural leather. Plenty of space, brilliantly organised, and super-comfortable to carry. It looks great, is bulletproof, and does the job better than I could have imagined.
Our exchange rate with the US is not currently great, and when you combine that with freight, Waterfield become a seriously premium option here in Aus. However, the value it adds to my world is huge, so the upfront cost quickly becomes somewhat irrelevant.
The Cargo instantly becomes a full life support system for a mobile office and totally transforms my ability to work on the go.
Thanks Gary (and crew). An absolutely sensational business tool - just love it!
