Perfect Style, Size and Features

I wanted a non-nylon, top quality backpack for my MacBook, notebooks (paper not tech) a book or two and THEN chargers & cables, water bottle, and smallish etceteras. I’m able to carry all I need for short trips or a day of writing and operating in the field. My packrat, carry it all tendencies are muted and I still have everything I need, including a collapsible Cico bag for picking up dinner on the way home : )
The Sutter Slim Backpack is the perfect Goldilocks category backpack. Just right.

Still my go-to bag after 3 years

I’ve had the Sutter Slim for over three years now, and I keep going back to it as my go-to bag. Occasionally I’ve tried to break up with it and use bags that are roomier or look a bit different, but those bags always find their way to the back of my closet.

But not the Sutter Slim. Its main compartment is roomy enough to hold the 16-inch MacBook Pro, iPad, notebooks, and headphones I take to work every day, and even with all that, it still has a tidy bit of room left over. Sometimes, yes, I wind up bringing home stuff that won’t fit in the bag, but I keep a canvas Trader Joe’s bag neatly wrapped up in the bottom of the bag for that very purpose. I also find the secondary compartments perfect for my needs: the top one gives me easy access to commonly used items and the bottom one is a perfect spot for battery packs, sunglasses cases, or portable umbrellas.

This is all great for convenience, but the real reason why I keep coming back to the Sutter Slim is that it feels so comfortable on my back regardless of how much stuff I cram in it. This is important as I live in SF and don’t have a car—so I almost always have a bag on me. The wear is never overbearing, and I like how the slim profile allows me to navigate crowded downtown spots with the comfort that a bigger bag isn’t being a nuisance.

It’s tough, too, and generally looks like it did on the day I got it. I have, however, replaced two of the zipper pulls with sturdier ones as the metal ends of the native ones fell off long ago. (Admittedly, this is partly because I usually handle them a little roughly.) The fabric in the top pocket is also starting to come unstitched, but this doesn’t affect the use of it. Indeed, I’ve thought about dropping my AirTag in there as I know it will be well-hidden. (There’s an idea: hidden AirTag pockets.)

I consider these minor issues. This is just the wear and tear of three years of almost constant use. In fact, I’m a little terrified of Waterfield discontinuing it, and I’ve considered buying an extra one just in case. I really do love it that much.

Not as good as the discontinued Staad but pretty great nevertheless

I am a big fan of the Staad slim backpack, which has been discontinued. I needed a little more space to carry workout clothes one day a week, so I got this Sutter Slim.

My context: long daily commute on a bus with WiFi. The commute is my most productive time of the day and I keep working to the last minute, then rapidly put everything away just in time to hop off the bus.

The good
- definitely fits a 13” MacBook Pro laptop, tablet, three phones, chargers and cables, umbrella, and my workout clothes
- looks great — smoother profile than the Staad
- more pockets
- same great yellow lining

The bad
- The Velcro strap seems unnecessary to me. Thinking about cutting it off. Slows me down and risks scratching the laptop.
- The zipper closure takes time to close and I’m always nervous about scratching the laptop as I slide it in. The Staad has a flap closure and no zipper. Much faster.
- can’t easily just put everything in the bag and hop off the bus, as stated in other points in this section. Carrying with the zipper open doesn’t work of course whereas the flap on the Staad can be folded over without actually snapping it in place.
- the key ring is in the side pocket. I keep my phone in there and would prefer having the keys inside the bag. Maybe an additional key ring inside would have helped?
- the tech bag (optional) is too bulky.

Best purchase I’ve made in a long time

Build quality from WaterField is incredible. The only thing I wish I did was order the size up from this backpack.

Keep your bag looking new by applying wax when you think it needs a little refresh. Although any wax is applicable, you can use Martexin Original Wax which was initially used to coat your canvas bag.

If you have the waxed canvas and chocolate leather version of the Sutter Slim Backpack, Gary shows how you can maintain these materials so they’ll look great over time. We use full grain Roughman Leather for your bag which has oils that respond well to heat.

Although this video is for the AirPods Max Shield Case, the maintenance also applies to your bag.
