Search for the Perfect Bag…..My Life Story’s Most Recent Chapter - Shinjuku Messenger

I used a book strap in High School and by 1971 I was entrenched as an undergrad school book/stuff bag guy, I’ve lost count how many I’ve had. The Shinjuku is what I’m using now and it’s great. The combo of waxed canvas and leather is superb. Magnet closure? Fantastic. The shape and drape of the Shinjuku is better than anything I’ve had…it’s big enough to swallow up my iPad, phone, 2 pairs of sunglasses, a pro-level multi tool, packet of calling cards, couple of pens, an oversized clutch-wallet, my 20 oz water bottle, a collapsible shopping bag and I could fit gloves, a cap and a windbreaker in it AND it hangs nicely on my hip, conforming to my body curve so it looks cool. Full disclosure, fully loaded it’s heavy but I have everything and it still looks cool. I used some velcro to mount my phone sleeve and my sunglasses case so they’re really simple to grab and if I were invited to make a suggestion, it would be to imagine sleeves for phone and glasses so you didn’t have to open the bag or even a zip to grab them. My sleeves are inside the zip pouch on the leather flap and it all just works well. This is a great bag, beautiful, superior construction, top shelf zip and a comfy strap. Really glad I got it.

Perfect EDC for Personal Use

When I ordered the full-sized waxed canvas Shinjuku, I imagined it would become my EDC for both work and personal use. Unfortunately, I underestimated my work requirements and quickly found that a messenger bag was not a suitable replacement for a laptop-friendly commuter backpack. The over-the-shoulder strap and unsecured flip cover did not lend themselves to the environments I moved in or the extra equipment I would sometimes need to carry. Shinjuku was the wrong tool for my job.

Accepting that my work and personal EDC will always be two different products, I happily resigned the Shinjuku to personal use only. My requirements were minimalist styling, no conspicuous branding, high-quality materials with pleasing colour and texture, easy access, sensible organisation, and modest but practical proportions. Shinjuku effortlessly ticks all these boxes at a fair price.

The Shinjuku employs simple design features to enhance its practicality. For instance, the internal bottle holder perfectly fits my Yeti Rambler 18-oz Bottle and neatly folds away when not in use. An internal zipper pocket keeps adaptors and cables secure, while the external waterproof zipper on the lid provides easy access to frequently used items like Airpods, access cards, or card wallets.

The tablet pouch is much bigger than it needs to be for any iPad and will comfortably hold a 14" MacBook. Neoprene padding separates the tablet pouch from the main compartment, but the base lacks any padding. Carelessly plonking my Shinjuku on the hard wooden floor of a cafe results in the heart-stopping "thud" of metal iPad and Magic Keyboard meeting the ground.

The Shinjuku's main compartment is surprisingly spacious. It easily accommodates my 18-oz water bottle, a Kleen Kanteen Rise Food Box 34-oz, a Davek Mini umbrella (because I live in New Zealand), and an Anker Prime 12000mAh Power Bank (130W), making it a practical choice for everyday use. Removing the food box will free up enough space for a light cardigan, overshirt, or windjacket.

The front compartment includes two internal pouches with a central area about 30cm wide. The pouches are wide enough for an A5 notebook (although it's a tight fit for a spiral-bound A5), and one pouch includes a short tether and clip for securing keys. I use the front compartment for an A5 notebook, two pairs of glasses in separate hardshell cases, my wallet, and a small pencil case. Other reviews have lamented the absence of pen holders, but I prefer using a pencil case. Pen holders are unsuitable for securing wooden pencils (or Apple Pencils) and don't protect your bag against leaky pens. Pencil cases keep all my writing tools in front of me when writing, and they are a good option for highlighters, erasers, small tools, and pencil shavings.

The shoulder strap is extremely minimal for a feature critical to comfort. It consists only of bare seatbelt-type material, with no shoulder pads or swivel clips. Despite some initial concerns, I eventually found this to be a case of less is more. Shoulder pads often require adjusting, especially when you toggle between on-the-shoulder and cross-body configurations, so their absence can reduce fuss. One caveat is that worn on the shoulder, the bare strap can be susceptible to slipping. If you need the padding for comfort, consider a backpack instead. I have a love-hate relationship with swivel clips; on one hand, they help prevent twisting, but they do so at the expense of being noisy and looking awful. A little extra care when shouldering your bag can easily prevent the strap from twisting. Finally, Waterfield nailed the strap colour, perfectly matched with the leather for a clean and tidy look.

If I had one nagging uncertainty about my purchase decision, it would be the size option. For the first time, I finally pulled the trigger on a Waterifeild bag, having wanted so many before but never being able to choose a size. I always worry that the compact size will look too purse-like or that the large size will be too encumbering to want to use. After choosing the larger size, it never felt encumbering or seemed too big. But could it be smaller? Everything currently in my full size would also fit into the compact size and be 400g lighter overall, so it boils down to looks, versatility, and weight. Regardless of which option is perfect for you, you will love the Shinjuku.

First Waterfield Bag! It's Amazing!

I was looking for a new messenger bag for my new iPad Pro 11" M4 and its Magic Keyboard and came across Waterfield and its new Shinjuku bag. Based on the excellent reviews on the internet I decided to give it a try despite the high import tax to Thailand. I was not disappointed! The quality is top notch, everything feels premium and you can see that a lot of love has gone into designing and making the product! This bag is going to make me happy for a loooong time and it is surely not going to be my last Waterfield purchase!

Love of Waterfeld bags! 💼

It is just amazing! They have actually improved the waxed canvas! It’s the perfect size for the items I currently take to work. It’s surprisingly light weight! I have bought several items from Gary and his team and they have never disappointed. The front water proof zipper pocket is by far my favorite feature!

My New Favorite

I have a lot of bags. Most from sfbags. This messenger bag has instantly become my favorite. I just love how there is no zipper or buckle needed to be open to reach the main compartments. My new iPad Pro fits in perfectly. There is plenty of space for all kinds of things. The front flap closes firmly with the magnets. The strap is great, easy to adjust and stays locked in place. The back hidden handle is great for grabbing the bag. Quality is top notch. I am sure I will be using this as my main messenger bag for many years. As a side note, when I got my new iPad I hoped to find this exact bag. I didn’t want to hassle to quickly retrieve my iPad or main items. Then when I saw the Shinjuku Messenger I knew I was buying it.

FIELD TESTED

Gary field-tested the compact size Shinjuku Messenger Bag in its namesake neighborhood in Tokyo. In it, he carried his jacket, a water bottle, and various travel necessities.

The bag did not disappoint. It was so comfortable and lightweight, that Gary never felt the need to take it off, even when slurping ramen in jam-packed food stalls.

CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER BAG

The full-grain leather panel on your Shinjuku Messenger bag will develop a beautiful patina over time. We usually recommend leaving it alone and letting it age naturally, but you may want to freshen it up a bit with a leather conditioner from time to time. If so, the leather may darken a bit, so test the reaction first on a spot that's not highly visible.

For the distressed chocolate leather that we use, you can spread the oils around and smooth them out a bit with heat from a hair dryer. Although the leather care video is of another bag, the same process is true for your Shinjuku Messenger bag.
