Designing the Waterfield Starlink Mini Case: What We Learned From You
A few months ago, we asked you a simple question: how do you actually use your Starlink Mini? We wanted the real, in-the-field truth from the people who strap this thing to a roof rack, toss it in a truck bed, or set it up in a parking lot between meetings.
We heard back from manyof you. Every response got read, and many of them shaped decisions you'll see in the final case. Here's a look inside that process; what the data told us, where it surprised us, and how it's translating into design.
What do people carry with a Starlink Mini?
Before designing a Starlink Mini travel case, we needed to understand what actually travels with the device. The power cord and power supply were nearly universal. Beyond those essentials, three accessories stood out:
- Car adapters — 57%
- Ethernet cables — 55%
- Extra power banks — 42%
The comments added another consideration. Starlink Mini car mounts, suction cup mounts, and Wi-Fi extenders came up frequently enough that we couldn't treat them as edge cases. For a meaningful number of users, they're part of the everyday Starlink Mini kit. This presented our first design challenge: How much gear should a Starlink Mini case comfortably hold? Build around the Mini alone and the case isn't useful enough.
Build around every possible Starlink Mini accessory and you end up with an oversized bag that few people want to carry. Finding the right balance became one of our primary goals.
We found three types of Starlink Mini users
Overlanders and travelers
These users take their Starlink Mini to remote destinations where reliable internet is generally unavailable. Their typical kit includes:
- Suction cup or car mount
- Car adapter
- Power cord and power supply
- External battery or power bank
For this group, portability and self-contained power are particularly important.
Car power users
These users keep a Starlink Mini in their vehicle as a reliable connectivity option when cell service isn't available. Their gear looks similar:
- Suction cup or car mount
- Car adapter
- Power cord and power supply
- External battery, occasionally
The difference is that the vehicle itself is usually the power source, making a separate battery less essential.
Remote workers
This group uses the Starlink Mini for work away from a traditional office like at job sites, workshops, studios, second homes, and other locations with unreliable internet.
Their setup looks different:
- Power cord and power supply
- Starlink Router Mini
- Ethernet cable
Instead of a mount-heavy mobile setup, their kit is designed around creating a temporary workspace.
Should you use a Starlink Mini while it's in a case?
About 63% of respondents said they keep some form of case or cover on their Starlink Mini while it's running.
However, our testing has pushed our design in another direction. Because the Starlink Mini generates heat during operation, we're designing our case primarily around transport, protection, organization, and quick deployment rather than enclosing the Mini while it's running.
Instead of forcing users to choose between organization and easy setup, we're adding a power-cord pass-through between the Starlink Mini compartment and the accessory compartment.
Pull out the Mini, position it where you need it, and route the 50-foot power cable through the pass-through. The remaining cable, power supply, and accessories can stay organized inside the case.
Why we're not designing a giant Starlink Mini case
One thing became obvious pretty quickly: we can't design around every accessory.
A case large enough for the Starlink Mini, 50-foot power cable, power supply, car adapter, Ethernet cable, power bank, mount, router, and Wi-Fi extender would quickly become bulky and cumbersome; that's not the direction we want to go.
Instead, we're using the three primary use cases to determine which accessories deserve dedicated space and which are better treated as optional additions.
The goal is a compact Starlink Mini case with thoughtful organization, enough protection for travel, and room for the accessories people actually use.
Aesthetically, we're approaching this the same way we approach our laptop bags, travel bags, and tech cases: understated looks, premium materials, thoughtful organization, and a clean design that doesn't look overly tactical.
What's next for the WaterField Starlink Mini Case?
We're still designing.
Our current target is a late October to early November launch, giving us time to continue testing prototypes and refining the organization before the final design is finalized.
