Review: Keyboard-Coddling Travel Case Is A Perfect Combination Of Lightness And Strength

Cult of Mac - June 4, 2012

"Safely slid into the Slip, your keyboard is kept snug and secure."
"The soft inner lining coddles the keyboard while the slippery ballistic nylon outer slides very easily even into an already full bag and also offers a decent degree of water protection."

Beautiful and Utilitarian

I recently gave up on Apple’s MacBook Pros, and went instead with the recently released Mac Mini. I purchased two pieces from Waterfield—the pouch custom designed to fit the Mini and the pouch designed to fit the trackpad and the extended keyboard. I love the look, the feel, the smell, the strength, and the protection of each product. The products are perfectly designed to cradle their intended components. There was a review or two that suggested the trackpad didn’t fit its intended space in the keyboard pouch. I can only assume these are individuals who are spacially challenged. It’s a perfect fit. Thank you guys for responding to the numerous people who are transporting the Mac Mini. The order was delivered quickly and with great care. Way to go@

Great quality product!

I love that the keyboard bag is cushioned on the inside and has a slot for my mouse.

Excellent fit, makes carrying the keyboard around much easier

It's nice not to have your Magic Keyboard bouncing around inside your tech sling. This is a great bag with room for the keyboard and a few more accessories.

Almost perfect

I bought the Magic Keyboard Travel Express to carry my Magic Keyboard Gen 2, Magic Trackpad 2 and a couple extra accessories. It works almost perfectly for that, except for the fact that the Trackpad does not fit horizontally in either of three internal pockets. I can either put it on the main compartment (where it rubs off with the keyboard) or put it vertically on the center pocket, but it's a tight fit and it forces the zipper up a bit.

Other than that, it's a great product. Build quality is amazing, the waxed canvas looks and feels great, and the main compartment and pockets are well padded.

It's fine but I think the Magic Keyboard case is a victim of an evolving product line.

Does the bag do the job? Yes, but... I generally don't like that line because fault can be found in anything or anyone, but my review here is focused on a piece that still "fits" into the product line... but it's an aging design within the ecosystem I've come to expect from Waterfield Products. I've bought a number of bags, pouches, backpacks and wallets from SF Bags over the years, but this is the first time I truly was left wanting. Let me explain. Most of the Waterfield pouches have a zip on the front with a mesh liner and soft pockets for cables. Missing on this pouch. So it "almost" carries what I intended, but simply requires another bag unless I want those cables in with the keyboard or stuffed into one of the already full wall adapter pockets. I don't like things to get scratched, so I had to get a benroy cable pouch to make up the difference. The second issue I have with this one is the older design of the main compartment zip. This is a prime example of the scenario where the wraparound zip is fully functional. The wrap around zip (particularly with a long item like the keyboard) would making stuffing and emptying the bag much easier. Again, these are features already baked into other Waterfield pouches I already own, but missing in this aging product. I'm grateful it patches my other waxed canvas pouches... because I need to carry both now.

What is the difference between ballistic nylon and waxed canvas?

Both are extremely durable materials. Ballistic nylon can take a pounding and will look the same years down the line. Waxed canvas takes on character and nicks and scrapes giving it a " been around the world" look.
