Lightweight, durable, classy

I've been buying bags from Waterfield Designs for two decades now and by now I must have at least a dozen bags of various sizes and purposes--initially carrying bags for my Kindles and other small electronic gizmos and then backpacks and sling bags. Clearly, I LOVE the quality and durability of their bags, as well as their thoughtful design.

At the moment, my go-to bags (depending on the size I need and the duration of my trip) are a hip bag which can double as a small sling (the Hip Sling Bag); a Sutter Tech Sling bag (the larger size one) ; and a full size Sutter Slim Backpack--all of them in waxed canvas and brown leather. They make for one versatile and classy set of bags!

Taken together that set of three bags meets almost all of my needs, from carrying my iPad mini and a few snacks (the hip bag); to carrying an iPad Pro or a MacBook Air and associated accesssories (the Sutter Tech Sling); to lugging an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and a MacBook Pro, along with accessories and maybe a light jacket or sweater (the Sutter Slim Backpack).

OK, so why was I looking at their website the other day? Well, I got to thinking it might be nice to have a lightweight backpack for when I just want a grab-and-go backpack. I'd been using an ultralightweight packable bag but it felt flimsy if I wanted to put any of my valuable electronics into it.

Long story short, I purchased the Packable Backpack and it arrived today. The fabric is a bit thicker than the bag I had been using and it's also waterproof. It looks and feels more substantial--and a lot classier--than the packable I had been using. It holds its shape much better than most packables, even when mostly empty. If I wanted to pack a ton of stuff into the bag, it has the capacity to fit most, if not all, of the same equipment and accessories as the full size Sutter backpack.(But that is not my intention.) As with all of Waterfield's bags that have zippers, the zippers on this bag are really nice waterproof YKK zippers.

While my new bag certainly is packable, the thickness of the fabric makes it a little harder to pack into the inner pocket that is designed to accommodate the packed bag. That said, I did not buy this back because it is packable but because is it lightweight yet durable--and oh, so classy. Yup, like all the other bags I have from Waterfield Design, I love this one too.

With input from over 1000 customers, we set out to design a packable bag ideal for both travel and every day.

To support multiple uses, we created a custom-made material that combines Taslan — a modern, high-tech woven fabric that feels good and substantial — with a layer of tricot mesh for structure and a water-resistant coating.

This durable, lightweight textile still looks crisp and unwrinkled even after it has been stuffed or folded.

A PACKABLE BAG FOR EVERY DAY

The Packable Backpack squishes down quickly and folds into its own pocket. Weighing less than a pound, it's designed for using in a pinch or for every day.

For extra comfort, you'll find features not found on most packable bag, like a strap lined with moisture-wicking mesh, interior lining, and pockets secured with waterproof zippers.

HOW TO FOLD

1. Lay the Packable Backpack flat and take out the interior pocket.

2. Fold into thirds toward the middle. Be sure to include the straps.

3. Roll from the bottom toward the pocket.

4. Turn the pocket inside out and flip the roll into the pocket.

5. Zip it up and go.
