“What do I like the most about it? Just a simple musette to toss an iPad, wallet, battery, cord, and snack in for the commute or ride into town for a meeting.”
Overall I am really pleased with my purchase of a brown Vitesse Cycling Musette bag with flap.
I like to carry it cross body on my right shoulder but when the strap is adjusted to my height and build (5'11"/165#) the adjustment buckle sits right on my shoulder. I tried adding a shoulder pad but that makes it too difficult to adjust the strap or to swing the bag from front to back or vice versa, so I'm returning the pad and am living with the strap length a little longer than I would like so that the buckle is not on my shoulder. An improvement I would like to see to avoid this problem is to provide two adjustment buckles, one on the front, one on the back. Alternatively have the ability to order with various strap lengths dependent on height/build. .
I particularly like the way this small bag holds much more than you would first imagine. Mine usually contains a medium WaterField Gear Pouch (cables, battery pack, Field Notebook, etc.), Pixel 2 XL in one of the pockets, small First Aid kit and a pen in the other pocket, water bottle and a lightweight cycling jacket. I rarely carry it but my Pixelbook in a WaterField sleeve will fit if needed.
As with all WaterField products, excellent quality and very responsive customer service.
I love the bag. Everything it promised. Ordered two more.
I've been using the bag every day for about two weeks now and am very happy with it. It looks great, and is the perfect for light everyday carry. The main body of the bag easily takes my MacBook Pro. One of the smaller pockets hold chargers and cables and pens, and the other holds notebooks and pens. It's proven to be acceptably waterproof in light to medium rain, especially with the flap.
I only have two minor quibbles. I think the strap is a little on the narrow side, I might pick up a shoulder pad in the future. Also the piece of leather that holds the studs is not aligned perfectly to the strap of leather with the holes in it that the studs fit into to secure the flap. It doesn't affect the operation of the bag at all, but does detract from the otherwise very good aesthetics a little bit.
I've been using the Vitesse Cycling Musette for about a month now. It's an excellent bag.
The materials and construction are solid. The stitching is clean, neat, and tidy. The seams all appear quite solid. There's no padding, but this isn't a big deal as I use a sleeve on my iPad. I think this will hold up well for the next few years.
I *love* the color. I went with the blue canvas and flap. It's beautiful. The brown strap, stitching, and leather bits look great on it. This makes a nice change from my previous bag, a Muzetto Outback.
As a messenger bag I have no complaints. It stays solidly on my back when commuting the 3-10 miles I ride each way. And it's equally good when I'm taking walks in the evening.
The bottom line: I think this is an excellent bag and look forward to using it for years to come.
It's a good solid bag. Simple. I like it.
Is this waterproof?
It’s not waterproof, but it is water-resistant.
What is the Vitesse Collection?
Although vitesse is French for "speed", the only speedy thing about the Vitesse Collection is how fast it can help you transition from casual to work and vice versa. The straightforward, un-complicated designs use lightweight canvas and full-grain leather to create contemporary pieces from old favorites. This collection is committed to the essentials, and have an easy, relaxed style: few pockets, no lining, no extra hardware. Fold and take them along as second travel bags, or use as your primary carry-all.
How can I keep the Cycling Musette from sliding toward my side when I’m riding?
Advice from Gary: Any messenger bag will slide around - while bent over on a bike, the center of gravity is below and in front of you - so the bag wants to go there. Larger messenger bags have the cross stability strap that helps keep the bag on your back. The smaller Musette bag is small enough that you should be able to keep it fairly well balanced on your back to keep it from sliding around. Back when I was messengering in Boston there were no Stability straps - we had to balance the larger loads on our back. You want to keep the strap short enough so that when riding - the bag fits into the small curve of your back.
