An upgrade from the popular waxed canvas version of the Vitesse Cycling Musette, this leather version perfectly pairs the rich character of full-grain leather with a classic cycling-inspired silhouette that looks just as good off the bike as it does in the saddle.

An open, canvas-lined interior and two pockets keep things refreshingly simple, with just the right amount of room for everyday essentials, including a laptop in its own protective sleeve.

Outstanding leather feel and function for an already perfect bag

Some reading this review may not have seen or handled a Waterfield leather bag in person, so you won't really be able to understand how superb this leather is. I have the Grizzly leather version, and it's not a thin aniline Italian gloves kind of leather, but it's not a nubby rustic leather either. It feels substantial; the bag itself is robust and it will take some breaking in and get more flexible over time. But it's not stiff either. It's pliable, even supple.
Others reading this review may not have used the Waterfield Vitesse Cycling Musette, so may not realize why you want a small bag this size. I say small, but it holds a lot: 6.2 Liters compares well to several of Waterfield's briefcases. I had it stuffed today, and it kept its shape, looked and carried right for brisk walking through the city, on and off trains and Metro. It's got useful space but carries small. It tucks under your elbow and doesn't look or feel like you're carrying a big volume messenger bag. Nor is it a highly shaped briefcase-looking bag. All of this is true of the canvas Vitesse version too, but in leather it becomes a perfect small satchel that carries well on the hip, on the back, or in the hand.
It has a special handle for that--a radiused leather handle that's a slightly slimmer version of the same handle on the Waterfield Executive Leather Messenger.
I've had that Executive bag for 18 months, and the Grizzly leather only gets better and better. I also frequently use the Vitesse Cycling Musette, so I'm surprised how much I needed this leather version of the same bag. It is somehow halfway in between. If I'd gotten this bag first, it might be the only one I'd need or use.

FULL-GRAIN LEATHER

No skimping. We use full grain, natural leather. It's the toughest part of the hide with the tightest grain. It's also the most expensive and lasts the longest.

We use “distressed” leather that bears the marks of the cow, so you can tell it's the real thing. Over the years, you'll leave your own marks, too, and the gorgeous patina that develops will bear your hallmark.

Your full-grain Vitesse Leather Cycling Musette will look better and better the more you use it.

HEAVY-DUTY 15 OZ. WAXED CANVAS LINER

The Leather Vitesse Cycling Musette is lined with substantial 15 oz. waxed canvas, adding a rugged, durable interior layer without unnecessary bulk.

Many fabrics marketed as “durable” come in around 12 oz. At 15 oz., our canvas has a noticeably more substantial feel while remaining lightweight and flexible.

We source our waxed canvas from a reputable U.S. mill that has produced these fabrics since 1930. Coated with Martexin Original Wax™, it develops a naturally distressed character with use. It requires minimal care, making it exceptionally well suited to years of everyday use.

CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER BAG

We generally recommend leaving the full-grain leather of your bag alone, letting it develop its own unique patina over time. You can spruce up the distressed leather that we use by applying heat from a hair dryer and spreading the leather oils around to smooth them out.

You may also want to freshen up the leather with a bit of leather conditioner. Upon application, the leather may darken a bit, so test the reaction first on a spot that's not highly visible, like the bottom of the bag.
